Our Lowe's has scratch and dent merchandise most of the time in the big appliance section. It's stuff that's missing parts or has been returned, damaged, or repaired. They can't sell the merchandise at full price, so they discount it, usually with an as-is restriction (no refunds or exchanges).
We had been caring for and feeding our aging clothes dryer for quite some time. A couple of days ago it was making enough noise to wake the dead. We've already replaced parts once to fix the noisiness and it looked like we were going to need to replace them again.
On the way to a church function tonight, we realized that we were going to arrive there a little early, so I suggested that we stop by Lowe's to see what they had.
We picked a good time to go. They had an electric Roper dryer (made by Whirlpool basically) in the scratch and dent section for $100. It was $187. Normally they'll mark things down about 10% or so, but I'd never seen one marked down to $100. The dryer did not have a manual and it was missing the power cord. The item also had been repaired, and I found out why — the person who brought it back said that it wasn't drying the clothes. Well, there was lint 2″ thick in the trap! Hmmmm…
So, we bought the dryer as-is, brought it home, cannibalized the cord from our old dryer, and it worked great!
I later checked www.RepairClinic.com for prices on the parts that we would have needed to replace. Drum glides and an axle bearing assembly were about $60 plus shipping. We got an almost new dryer for $40 more. Not too bad a deal!
Excellent deal – Good Job!
Just to make you feel even better about your purchaes, dryers usually don't come with a power cord installed. That is an added expense when you buy a new dryer. The reason for this is that there are several different types of outlets that are available in homes for electric dryers. Just make sure that whenever you replace a dryer you take the cord off before getting rid of it.
Jane and Colleen, thanks for your comments!
Colleen, thanks for telling me this. We had never bought a dryer (we used the one that came with our house and I had renter before) so we thought it was a little strange that it didn't come with the power cord. The next day when I went back to get more ducting, I saw the cords for sale right there.
