When we were home-shopping a few years ago, one of the selling points of the subdivision we chose eventually was that it was going to be located close to a future Walmart store. This might not be for everybody, but we like the convenience of being so close to Walmart. They're giving the other grocery stores a run for their money.
Our powdered milk experiment is working pretty well. We've drastically cut the amount of fresh milk we drink. We mix Walmart's store-brand powdered milk (the “Great Value” brand) with protein powder for shakes in the morning, and we've gotten used to the taste. I hardly miss that it's not fresh milk.
Get Great Value powdered milk for less than even at Walmart stores through Walmart online delivery
We took a quick trip to Walmart this weekend to get some material for my wife's garden. On the way she remembered that she was going to buy powdered milk online … from Walmart.com. The online price for the same Great Value powdered milk was less than in was the Walmart store. I couldn't find anything on Amazon — or even eBay — that touched this price.
What's even better is that Walmart.com has its own version of Amazon' Super Saver Shipping. Walmart.com calls theirs Home Freeâ„¢ Shipping. Shipping is free on selected items within the 48 contiguous states for orders over $45. So, we order four four-pound boxes of powdered milk to qualify for the Home Free Shipping, and they arrive at our doorstep in about a week.
I don't know which is stranger: wanting to live so close to a Walmart store, or ordering from Walmart.com even though we're within walking distance of a Walmart! Overall, though, this is a Very Good Thing. I'm more than happy to have Amazon.com and Walmart aiming at each other, trying to pull business away from each other by competing for the online grocery shopping market. It makes prices and service better. Hooray for capitalism!
I think this will be a trend as we get busier. It is probably why Amazon is now in the grocery delivery business.
I honestly have mixed feelings about all of this. Sure, it is convenient but I do think there is a bit of the experience that we would be missing…
