A “mini-game” complements your main game by providing variety and a secondary focus.

My main goal through August 2024 is to earn $100 through Medium in a single month.

I'm also working toward qualifying for the YouTube Partner Program with my channel.

My work on the channel gives me material to bring here, which works directly toward my primary goal.

I skipped a week, again. Got hit with food poisoning and I'm mostly recovered from that.

Since the last update, I've added one short.

The short talked about bills called mixed ladders:

Continuing to support other YouTubers

I continue to get great comments from a few subscribers. New ones are showing up, which is great!

I've subscribed to several channels and look for the little blue dot next to their channel name to see if they've posted new videos. I also have a free version of a Chrome extension that allows me to group all of my currency-collecting colleagues and check them all out in a targeted feed.

In the late 2000s decade I tanked my blog when I didn't respond to comments. I refuse to do that with this channel. It seems to be helping.

Monetization eligibility

I currently have 641 subscribers, up 10 from the previous update two weeks ago. I need 1,000 subscribers minimum.

I'm up to 657 public watch hours over the past 12 months, up 4 from the previous two weeks. I need 4,000 minimum on regular videos. (People watching Shorts don't count toward the 4,000 hours.)

Surprisingly I had upticks in both stats, despite publishing only one video at the end of the period. That surely won't last and I need to start publishing again.

With each video I add, though, I get some residual watching, about 1.5 hours per month, per video, which starts to add up. That, and more subscribers should increase the watch time for new videos that come out.

This is how it has to work: one view, one subscriber, one like, one share at a time.

My strategy going forward

My strategy for increasing these numbers continues to be:

  • Continue to post new videos. (I'm thinking I need to mix up the Shorts a bit more.)
  • Develop relationships with other similar channels.
  • Respond to comments without fail.
  • Cross-promote videos on my other online properties, such as my blogs and my Facebook group.

Cross-promoting videos

As a reminder, here's how I cross-promote some of my videos:

  • I embed the videos on my blogs. Views and watch time that happen there count.
  • I post the videos in my Cool Serial Facebook group.
  • If people have a question about what a bill is worth, and I've recorded a pricing video on that kind of bill, I'll post a link to the video in the comment.
  • I link to the videos in these updates!
  • I promote the videos in my lead magnets, and my newsletter.
  • Within YouTube, I add cards and end screens in the videos to cross-promote relevant videos.
