Find these deals while you still can
My main work computer was grinding to a slow death.
I'd put up with the lengthy reboots, the pegged disk activity, and the frozen screens long enough.
Last week I bought a new reasonably-priced desktop that should last me at least a few years.
Setting up the new computer
The setup process for Windows machines is polished, I must say. That was really easy.
What followed took a little more effort, and that was getting my files and software moved over.
Some parts of this were smooth, others took some emails to tech support to deactivate licenses on orphaned machines so that I could reinstall things.
Much of this software has either a subscription or a maintenance package associated with it. No subscription, no software.
I'm still using Microsoft Office 2013
Some time ago I bought Microsoft Office 2013 through the Microsoft Home Use Program through my employer. It's a physical disc with a 25-character activation code.
I realized a bit late that my new desktop didn't come with a DVD drive! Thankfully, my wife had bought an external USB drive so that she could play her CDs on her computer (her laptop doesn't have one, either).
In a matter of minutes, Office 2013 was back up, ready to roll.
The best part of all of this
I paid for Office 2013 over a decade ago.
Once.
This is how software used to be sold: once. And you used it until your computer didn't function anymore.
Office is now offered as Microsoft 365, which is a subscription service.
To be fair, Microsoft still does offer one-time purchase versions of Office, which is increasingly unusual.
“One-time purchase” is no longer common. It's becoming a selling point.
Anytime you can get a one-time purchase over a subscription — also perhaps known as a “lifetime deal” — it's worth considering. If you plan to use the product for a long time, it could be a money-saver!
