Passive income apps (no, really)

This post may contain affiliate links, which means that we may be compensated if you click to a merchant and purchase a product or sign up for a service.

You can make extra money on the side in any number of ways.

Most of them require ongoing effort of some kind:

  • Blogging means writing posts, or paying someone to do that
  • Taking surveys means actually doing the surveys
  • Affiliate marketing requires getting the links in front of people
  • Any service means doing the service
  • And so forth …

On a different level, some money-making opportunities require regular check-ins or regular activity to keep things active. Granted, it's not a particularly high bar to log in once every 60 days, but I've had more than one account canceled because I didn't do this.

App #1: EarnApp

EarnApp pays you for unused bandwidth on your internet connection. Companies will use the bandwidth to collect publicly available information for legitimate business purposes.

I've found the load to be negligible, and the app doesn't take up a lot of resources.

The minimum payout is $2.50. I elected to get mine through PayPal, and EarnApp charges a nominal 2% fee to do this. The first payment came within a few days.

Now I have auto-withdrawal set up, so money should just show in my PayPal account. There's no requirement to log in as far as I know.

It's not a huge amount of money but it just kind of drips in every day, automatically. If people sign up through your referral link, you earn 10% of their earnings for life (it doesn't come out of their earnings, it's baked into the system).

App #2: HoneyGain

(For the longest time I had confused this with Honey, the coupon app, but they're completely different apps.)

HoneyGain works on pretty much the same principle as EarnApp. The graphics are a bit more exciting inside the app, but who cares honestly haha. I can share bandwidth as with EarnApp. I can also get in the queue for content delivery, which is more bandwidth-intensive but less frequent. This pays a flat rate per hour I'm active.

HoneyGain has a partnership with JumpStart, which is a cryptocurrency project centered around microtasks. I haven't delved into this because I don't need another cryptocurrency floating around out there that I have to keep track of.

There's also the opportunity to earn badges for checking in every day, for example. So that's not completely passive but it's not a requirement for earning through HoneyGain.

The minimum payout is $20 (20,000 credits). I'm currently at just under 15,000 credits.

Like EarnApp, HoneyGain rewards you with 500 credits once a referred user shares 2 GB of bandwidth. You'll also get 10% of the lifetime earnings of your referrals, and they'll get 3,000 bonus credits.

App #3: Passive App

This next app is app-tly named (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Passive App is another straightforward internet-sharing app with set-and-forget income. The Windows dashboard is responsive and updates regularly, automatically.

The nature of apps like this is that the load on a decent Internet connection is reasonable, so it's fine to try several of them and see which ones perform the best over time!

App #4: CryptoTab

This one's a little different.

With CryptoTab you can browse the internet like normal and mine bitcoin in the background.

I had used a spare computer to crank things up to the maximum hash rate and my computer ran hot. I don't do that part anymore but if you have a beefier computer than I do, it may be worth it.

As passive as income apps can get

These websites are among the most hands-off, passive income I've run across. Three pay in cash and one pays in cryptocurrency.

All three of them involve running an app on your computer. Once the app is running, though, the money trickles in pretty much on its own.

Here they are:

The referral structure goes down 10 levels. This sounds like a pyramid scheme or an MLM scheme, but it's not. It's not necessary to pay for anything to join. All of the multi-level commissions are part of the system, and no one earns more or less depending on when they join. (There just won't be as many potential new members to refer later, but that's true of anything.)

I do have some referrals, and because of that, I can just let things ride without mining bitcoin myself. I got these referrals with some posts on my blog and a video on YouTube.

There are several ways to spend money on CryptoTab, and I haven't done any of them. I just let it sit there and gather commissions from my referrals.

There's an advantage to having many sources of income

None of these income sources are going to be life-changing by themselves. A few bucks here and there.

And at this point, I'm not sure that I really want to seek out more kinds of income like these. Once I reach payout on a few others, I probably will let them go to simplify my life a bit.

But a few low-maintenance ones, especially ones that can be started for no money at all like these, are a good way to start understanding how to make money on the Internet:

  • The basics of referring people for bounties or commissions
  • The overall structure of an offer
  • The lifecycle of an opportunity (these don't make money forever)
  • Testing calls to action and methods of delivery

There's goodness in these kinds of money-making websites, and they're gateways to different kinds of side incomes that build a brand and a solid online presence.

If you are interested in testing the waters, these are a great place to start and payout in a reasonable time. (EarnApp is the quickest one.)

And as I mentioned, these passive income apps take pretty much zero babysitting. They just do their thing and pay you!
