A reader Vanessa commented on a previous discount grocery post to ask if there were any such stores in the Nashville, TN, area.
I poked around a little bit with Google and there's a discount grocery store directory over at ExtremeBargains.com.
To recap: discount grocery stores sell salvaged groceries that were overstock, slightly out of date, or slightly damaged, but otherwise fine — kind of like scratch and dent appliances. The deals are pretty good.
To answer Vanessa's question, there are two discount grocery stores — Bud's Salvage and Such, and House of Bargains — both located in Lebanon, TN, about 30 miles away from Nashville.
Check the directory out to see if there's one near you!
In the past people usually found these stores through word of mouth. It’s great there are listings now! Discount grocery stores are so convenient, and they save your money – which is important in the time of crisis. I’m always surprised with how little I spend on the cart full of groceries. So, thanks for the list!
This is a great resource especially with these tough economic times.
People may also want to check out bakery discount outlets as well. You can get bread, buns, English muffins, bagels, rolls, and other baked goods at a discount of 50% to 75% off of supermarket prices.
And despite common perception, the items are fresh. You can find Entenmanns bakery outlets near you by visiting:

Should add good post! Looking forward to reading your next post!
its good due know that, despite the recession, there are certain stores that still provide groceries at reasonable prices
This is a great resource for travelers – we used it all week on our road trip family vacation! thanks!
This is a great post and resource. I never knew such places existed and I thought I was one heck of a bargain hunter already. We need a list of such stores/warehouses for Canada. If you find one, could you email me?
Thanks, Mike
What about farmers markets? With the tough economic times I’m afraid a lot of people are looking for the cheapest groceries however they don’t take into account the cost to their health that these “low cost” packaged food items cause.
We have similar stores in Australia. They are called “Not quite right” or NQR. Poor choice of name I think but they sell essentially the same, good and products, including food that is past its use by date mostly.
They have been around for some years so much be successful.
You can go ‘up bush’ (up the country to US citizens) and buy from farmers much cheaper too here.
When you can find these places it’s great,I buy all my bakery items at the day old outlets and i know it saves me thousands a year,The only thing you have to watch out for at the discount grocers is that sometimes the products are out of date,so if the cans don’t look right-Don’t buy it because what’s inside may or may not make you sick, but it’s better to be safe than to risk food poisoning
I will only go as far as buying snacks from these discount grocery stores. Any other type of food may get you sick.
I agree – even if the budget is really tight, there are other areas where you can reduce your costs. Food quality is the last thing I’m willing to sacrifice, because I know that my health (and the health of my family) is one of my most important assets.
I am so glad there is a published list out there. In my state there are a couple listed but I forgot there was one in the town I went to college. I am going to email them the name of it so they can add it to their list.
I do stuggle with buying food at a lot of the stores because I normally buy items that are Organic. I try to buy papertowels, napkins, baggies at these overstock stores though which can save some serious dough.
I can’t find the list so if you could give me the direct link ..
I am in Turtletown Tennessee so I border Georgia and North Carolina. . But since I have to drive over 30 or more to get to the grocery store if would be a blessing to make sure I get the best value at one store instead of driving from state to stay and spending alot on gas …
Thank You
