Around 100 people (myself included) are currently in the process of moving to another building at work. Because the new place has less storage space than the old, out of necessity we cleaned out and purged our files and “excessed” a lot of stuff.
30-year-old computer printouts, software on 5 1/4″ floppy disks (remember those?), copies of Windows 95 — sure, those are all right to recycle. But what some people consider “excess” amazes me:
- Spiral notebooks that haven't been written in
- Blank CD-Rs still wrapped in the jewel boxes
- Hanging file folders in excellent shape, when all of the new office space has drawers already tailor-made for hanging file folders
- Literally hundreds of folders, looseleaf binders, and comb bindings in great condition
- Brand-new Brita water pitcher
- Prepackaged food, unopened
- Cables for current computer technology
- Packing tape with a good 30-40 feet of tape left on it
I took in what I could for re-use at work but I just don't have space there for everything that was useable. It's just sad.
