Business is cyclical. Here are the best things to buy in May …

There are good deals to be found year round for just about anything. However, it's the nature of business that a lot of deals happen at the same time during the year.
Best things to buy in May
Here are things that you can find good deals on in May:
- Mattresses. If I recall correctly, the last time we got a mattress was around this time of year. The place where we went was willing to make a great deal for us. We had a price in mind, and they came back with a lower price. Sold! It's not like May is National Mattress Month or something like that; it just is a good time to buy them. There also are good deals to be had on mattresses around Labor Day.
- Swimwear. Bikini and one-piece time is going to be here soon, but retailers haven't jacked up their prices yet.
- Cookware and grilling accessories. Kitchen stuff and barbecue stuff are on sale this month. (Kitchen stuff also is a great semi-traditional Mother's Day gift.) Grills, however, are not a good buy this time of year, just the accessories.
- Appliances. Ranges, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners. (Though it's questionable whether a vacuum cleaner is a good semi-traditional Mother's Day gift. Probably not.)
- Office furniture. Possibly the home office furniture section in stores needs to become the outdoor patio furniture section. Regardless of the reason, it's the season to get office furniture for cheap.
- Springtime clothes. It's actually spring, so it seems a bit counter-intuitive that spring clothes would be on sale. I can see in autumn, but spring? (Actually, I take that back … May is late spring, which means that it's supposed to be almost summer! Ahhh, now I see. The weather has thrown off my internal clock.)
- Par-tay stuff. As in early summer weekend par-tay stuff, and graduation par-tay stuff. Plates, cups, etc.
- Gym memberships. Because the weather is getting nicer, going to the great indoors is a tougher sell, and hence there are bargains to be had.
- Thrift store items. Thrift store inventory continues to benefit from spring cleaning, much like it benefits from end-of-year tax write-off time. More inventory means that they need to lower prices in order to move it and make room for fresh stuff.
I wouldn’t have thought gym memberships would be more affordable versus other months. That’s really surprising, but I guess it does make sense.
I’ve also heard that gym memberships are the kind of thing that is always worth negotiating.
